Wine maker: Phillip Jones James Halliday ★★★★★ rating winery
The Bass Phillip estate is located at Leongatha South, South Gippsland, about 150 kilometres south-east of Melbourne. This small, 10 acre vineyard, established by Phillip Jonesin 1979, has provided wines of depth and complexity since 1984 is rapidly acquiring a reputation not dissimilar to the great domains of Burgundy. With miniscule yields of sometimes less than 1 ton to the acre, the annual production is limited to only a few hundred cases.
In some years only one barrel of Reserve will be bottled! Phillip Jones’ attention to detail that in part leads to these small quantities. Individual bunches are hand sorted, graded and discarded if they are not up to the rigorous Bass Phillip standard (up to 30% of fruit is discarded in difficult years). Looking to ensure that the wines are a clear expression of the vineyard site, the key priorities at Bass Phillip include dry farming, deliberate low cropping, avoiding the use of residual pesticides, minimal additives during the winemaking process (the winery is gravity fed - no pumps), the use of natural yeasts and no filtering of the wine prior to bottling.
